Malibu evacuates
Fiery sunrise as 3,800 acres burn

A Malibu resident filmed a fiery sunrise as the Franklin Fire burned nearby. As of Wednesday morning, the fire had burned more than 3,800 acres, but there is some good news in the forecast.

On Tuesday, the Franklin Fire exploded to more than 3,800 acres as powerful Santa Ana wind gusts brought dangerous fire weather to the region. The WindRadar shows the gusty offshore winds that helped this fire grow out of control. A Malibu resident caught a fiery sunrise on Tuesday as the Santa Ana winds blew smoke over the Pacific.

Nearby students at Pepperdine University also had to shelter in place as the fire raged nearby on Tuesday. While Pepperdine escaped damage, seven buildings have been destroyed. While fire danger remains elevated today, more favorable conditions will build in by tomorrow. The WindRadar shows lighter winds today, but the easterly component will keep humidity values low and the fire risk high.

Some favorable changes move in tomorrow. Our WindRadar shows a shift in wind direction. Westerly winds tomorrow will bring moisture off the Pacific and help raise humidity levels. This will lessen the fire risk and help firefighters fight the Franklin Fire.

Air quality impacts may be felt across parts of southern California due to the smoke. Use our air quality tool to determine whether it's safe to head outside.
