Breakfast Brief
Francine's remains soak your Friday

Francine's remains are sending downpours across the Mississippi Valley and Southeast today. Not to be outdone, the heat returns to the southern Plains.

After causing trouble in the last 48 hours across the Gulf Coast, Francine's remains are dispersing across the Midwest and Southeast. Heavy downpours and gusty winds, some greater than 30 mph, will wrap up the workweek. Have your alerts switched on to know if significant rainfall is headed for your area.

This day in weather history

A 136 degree temperature reading was recorded in Libya on this day, the world's highest temperature on record.

Possible record-breaking heat returns to the southern Plains on Friday as highs head for the 90s and triple digits. Amarillo, Texas, could beat its 99-degree record set back in 1959 if it reaches the forecast 100 degrees. Del Rio, Texas, could tie its 101-degree record set back in 2017 too!

The heat really sticks around this weekend. Here's a preview!

Tropical update:

Now that Francine has come and gone, we're keeping a close eye on three more areas for development, including Tropical Depression 7. The area closest to the U.S., off the Carolina coastline, is something to watch over this weekend. We'll be bringing updates throughout the weekend to keep East Coast residents up to date.

The news we're covering today:

  • Heat returns to the South
  • Weekend tropical update
