Heavy rain and snow return as a series of storms hits the West Coast

Heavy rain and snow
A series of storms for the West

It will be soggy for the West Coast as a storm moves in off the Pacific, bringing heavy rain and snow. Another system will swing in just in time for the weekend, and an even more powerful system is on the way by the end of the weekend into early next week.

A Pacific Storm is pushed onto the West Coast Wednesday, bringing rain to the coastal reaches of central and northern California and into Oregon and Washington. Soggy weather is still in play for San Francisco, Eugene and Portland, Ore., and Seattle Thursday.

Rain totals amounting to 2 to 4 inches will be possible along the northern California coastline into coastal Oregon—the good news is that southern California, which had historic rainfall amounts last week, will be spared from the heavy rain through the end of the week.

Heavy snow is also in the forecast. The WeatherRadar shows snow for the next for the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and the Rockies. Heavy snow will push east across Idaho, southwestern and western Montana, and parts of northwestern Wyoming Wednesday evening into Thursday.

Wind gusts

Lower elevations in southwestern Montana could see 1 to 4 inches of snowfall. Higher accumulations are expected in the Cascades, northern Sierra, and parts of the Rockies, where 1 to 2 feet of new snowfall is expected through Friday. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories stretch across the Sierra Nevada in northern California, the Cascades in Washington and Oregon, and across the northern Bitterroot and Rocky Front Range and the Salmon River Mountains in Idaho.

Gusty winds up to 85 mph at peak level may cause near-whiteout conditions at times. Use caution and check road conditions before driving, especially if you plan to travel along mountain passes.

Two more Pacific storm systems will move in over the weekend and early next week. A low pressure system off the Pacific will bring the second round of rain to the West Coast Saturday. An even more impactful storm moves in Sunday night and will bring heavy rain, mountain snow, and gusty winds through Tuesday. Significant flooding may occur with this system.
