Incredible sunset in Minneapolis

Did you know that storms can enhance a sunset's colors? This happened in Minneapolis on Monday. Check out the video above to see an incredible display.

You don't need a clear sky for a stunning sunset. Thunderstorms can often enhance the vibrant colors produced by the setting sun. Monday's sunset in Minneapolis is an excellent example of this phenomenon.

So how does this happen? During a sunset, the sun is low on the horizon, which means its light has to pass through more of the Earth’s atmosphere. The shorter blue and violet wavelengths of light are scattered out by particles in the air, leaving behind the longer red, orange, and pink wavelengths.

Read more about the storms that produced this sunset here.

Storms often add particles, such as dust and water droplets, to the atmosphere, enhancing the scattering effect and deepening colors. Water droplets can also reflect and refract light, contributing to phenomena like rainbows, which also appeared over the Minneapolis skyline.
