One more severe threat before a break

Eyes on the weekend
One more severe threat before a break

After multiple days of flooding rains in the South, a renewed threat moves in this weekend, bringing more heavy rain as well as a severe storm threat. As much as a slight risk has been issued at this time.

On Saturday, a low pressure moving out of the western Gulf of Mexico will make its way into the Deep South. Siphoning warmer air and moisture within its southwesterly and southerly flow, severe storms are possible, especially in Alabama.

A slight risk has been issued ahead of Saturday's severe weather threat.
A slight risk has been issued ahead of Saturday's severe weather threat.

These storms will be isolated to scattered with damaging gusts being the main threat. The gusts could reach over the 57-mph mark and could do significant damage if outdoor items are not strapped down or brought indoors.

With these damaging winds, outdoor objects could easily be picked up and tossed about, becoming dangerous to buildings and people nearby.

The WeatherRadar shows thunderstorm activity getting started early, even before sunrise across the Gulf Coast. At this time, those from Mobile, Ala., through Atlanta and just south of Chattanooga, Tenn., can expect at least isolated severe activity with Montgomery, Prattville, and Anniston, Ala., getting the more scattered thunderstorms.

Don’t be surprised to see flash flooding activity as these storms move in too, especially for Alabama and Georgia. The last several days of heavy rainfall in the South have soaked the ground completely and adding more rainfall will only cause runoff and more flooding.

At this time, a marginal risk, a level 1 out of 4 for excessive rainfall, has been issued. Remember, turn around, don’t drown.

Wondering when the South will get a break from the consistent rainfall? Look no further than late this weekend after the storm system bringing severe weather on Saturday makes its way east.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
