Post-tropical cyclone Lee: Thousands without power in Main, 1 dead

Post-tropical cyclone Lee
Thousands without power in Maine, 1 dead

After 12 days of being named Lee and navigating through the Atlantic waters, Lee made landfall in Long Island, Nova Scotia, Canada at 4:10 p.m. Eastern Time.

Lee was a post-tropical cyclone at the time of landfall, this means that it had lost some of its tropical characteristics. Nonetheless, it arrived with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, roughing up the seas and still bringing considerable winds even across the New England region.

Unfortunately, the storm has claimed the life of a person in Maine. A 51-year-old man died as a tree limb fell on his vehicle. Thousands of trees and power lines have fallen across the state, and around 6 hours after landfall, Maine is still reporting over 63 thousand customers without power. Many cities across Maine have had a very wet summer, so these rains and winds are just the icing on the cake and make the soil less stable. So, when the strong winds came, trees easily toppled.

In Nova Scotia, residents fled in ferries, while the providence's airport canceled all flights. This is the same region that has dealt with flooding and wildfires this season. Residents in the area are just tired of dodging nature repeatedly.

This was a monstrous storm, not necessarily in categories, but in size. As we discussed on Friday, Lee resembled more a Nor’easter at this latitude, and the Northeast is very fortunate to have it stay so far out over the open Atlantic, any inch closer or a slight shift west, and the story would have been very different for many big cities across the region.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
