Breakfast Brief
Arctic air settles, West & Great Lakes more active

Temperatures feeling like 30 below zero will blanket the northern tier. A lake-effect snow event continues across the Great Lakes as the West sees its next rain and snow event. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

Temperatures through mid-morning for those in northeastern North Dakota to northern Wisconsin are frigid! As if the morning temperatures well below zero weren't enough, the feels like temperatures will come close to minus-30 F. These are dangerously cold temperatures, and while records aren't on the chopping block, residents are encouraged to take precautions.

A cold front swept through on Wednesday and left behind a wintry air mass. Luckily, temperatures won't be as cold as in the northern tier, but many will notice the large drop. Kansas City, St. Louis, Mo., and Louisville, Kent., will only see highs around freezing with teens and 20s spreading across the Ohio Valley through the interior Northeast.

With these chilly temperatures comes gusty northwesterly flow and therefore a lake-effect snow event. The WeatherRadar shows heavy snow falling all along the Great Lakes, lasting through Friday afternoon in some spots. Those along the shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie in western New York could see more than 2 feet!

To the west, residents will be dealing with rain and mountain snow with icy conditions possible this morning in the northern Great Basin. Make sure your winter emergency kit is packed and ready to go if you will be traveling in the Cascades or Sierra Nevada passes. Those who have been dealing with wildfires in southern California will welcome wet weather by this afternoon.
