Gradual warming to record heat
San Joaquin Valley: Upward trend

Near-or-record breaking heat for the San Joaquin Valley by the end of the week.

The San Joaquin Valley is on a temperature rollercoaster this week. Although the week has started with maximum temperatures between 5 to 7 degrees above average, the trend will continue to go up, and by the end of the week, some areas could be with highs over 20 degrees above normal.

The warmth will begin to be felt on Tuesday with dry gusty winds also affecting the area, possibly up to 25 mph. Wednesday will be warmer, and Thursday and Friday it will be hot.

Why so hot?

An upper- level high- pressure system is forecast to move in from the west and will gradually increase temperatures. The peak is forecast to happen on Thursday and Friday with the temperatures in cities along the San Joaquin Valley, like Sacramento, having near-record high temperatures. The record high for Thursday in Sacramento is 91, established in 1989. We are forecasting 88 degrees, for now. Other cities along the valley like Merced will come really close to triple digits.

Make sure you plan accordingly. Take breaks often if you are working outdoors and stay hydrated throughout the day. Please don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water, at this point you could already be dehydrated. Dressing in light colors and thinner materials also help you stay cooler.
