Hilary targets the Southwest

The Southwest braces for life-threatening flooding as Hilary brings more than a year's worth of rain to many communities. This live blog will keep you up-to-date on the latest as this powerful storm brings big impacts.

6:45 p.m. Pacific

Tropical Storm Hilary continues to produce heavy rainfall and strong winds across Southern California and the Southern Great Basin. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph, with higher gusts reported in areas like Yuma, Arizona, and Imperial County Airport, California.

Tropical storm conditions are expected to persist through tonight but will likely improve by tomorrow morning as Hilary weakens and is forecast to become a post-tropical cyclone overnight.

5:45 p.m. Pacific

Jonathan Petramala is reporting from I-10 near Palm Springs, where flooding is causing major problems. Travel is not recommended at this time.

Flooded roads have led to a declaration of a local emergency in Palm Springs, Calif.

4:15 p.m. Pacific

While flooding is by far the biggest hazard from Hilary, there have been some very gusty winds in Southern California, especially in the mountains, where gusts upwards of 70 mph have been measured.

A tornado warning is in effect until 4 p.m. PT for Alpine and Descanso, Calif.

3:15 p.m. Pacific

The magnitude of the earthquake near Ojai has been updated to 5.1. So far, at least four aftershocks have been at least 3.0 or more in Magnitude.

3:00 p.m. Pacific

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake just occurred near Ojai, Calif. There is no tsunami threat for southern California.

2:30 p.m. Pacific

While flooding is the most significant concern with Hilary, a few tornadoes are also possible. A slight risk (level two out of five) of severe storms is in place for parts of Southern California and southwestern Arizona.

Waters are rising in Los Angeles as more moisture funnels in. Nearly 3 inches of rain has already fallen in LA County and more is on the way.

1:30 p.m. Pacific

Highway 98 along the U.S./Mexico border is closed due to flooding. Jonathan Petramala is on scene reporting for Weather & Radar.

Five shelters are open in California and are ready for residents impacted by Hilary. Shelters are open in Imperial, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.

Tropical Storm Hilary has officially made landfall in northern Baja California. The flooding threat is just beginning for the Southwest.

Mudslides are already starting up in Palmdale, Calif., and Los Angeles County is now under a flash flood warning. Check conditions on the WeatherRadar and avoid travel.

11:45 a.m. Pacific

Communities in the Bond Fire burn area in Silverado and Williams Canyons are under a voluntary evacuation notice due to possible debris flows near the burn scar area. Los Angeles County Parks, the LA Zoo, Legoland, and Disney Land are all closed today and tomorrow.
