Los Angeles area hit by rare EF1 tornado

As if the persistent flooding, damaging winds, and staggering snowfall were not enough, rare tornadoes have been thrown into the mix of stormy California weather.

On Wednesday afternoon, 17 buildings in Montebello, Calif. about 5 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, were damaged by an EF1 tornado. As workers scattered for safety, a few were able to get a glimpse of the rare SoCal storm on camera. Shingles and other debris were lofted across the sky.

Witnesses reported several cars were damaged by the objects and at least 1 person was injured.

The tornado's estimated peak winds were of 110 mph – the strongest tornado to hit the Los Angeles area since 1983.

However, this was not the first tornado to strike SoCal this week. On Tuesday morning, a weak tornado was spotted over the seaside town of Carpinteria, in Santa Barbara County.

The tornado produced winds up to 75 mph damaging 25 mobile home units in the Sandpiper Village mobile home park and causing minor tree damage in surrounding areas.

Tornado warnings are rare in southern California, but unfortunately, these warnings flashed across residents' screens Tuesday and Wednesday. Recent active weather comes as California has been plagued in recent months by at least 12 atmospheric rivers that have brought devastating flooding and hurricane-force winds.

In San Francisco, at least 5 people have died after the storm lashed out with violent winds over the Bay Area knocking down power lines and at least 700 trees. 911 emergency call center reportedly had four times its usual call volume on Tuesday.
