Wet across the Southeast

Breakfast Brief
Wet across the Southeast

Soggy conditions are expected in the Southeast today as a front meets up with a coastal low. Troughing across the West will also spread showers from California to the Plains.

Wet weather will build across the Southeast as a front meets up with a coastal low. A few areas of flash flooding are possible across the Carolinas, so use caution when driving and take steps to avoid rising waters. Track this system on our WeatherRadar.

This day in weather history

On this day in 1928- Hurricane San Felipe, a monster hurricane, which left 600 dead in Guadeloupe, and 300 dead in Puerto Rico, struck West Palm Beach FL causing enormous damage, and then headed for Lake Okeechobee. When the storm was over, the lake covered an area the size of the state of Delaware, and beneath its waters were 2000 victims.

An upper-level trough will bring rain and cooler temperatures to the West Coast today, with cities like Sacramento and San Francisco staying in the 60s and 70s. Some of this rain will spread into the Great Basin and Plains, and snow will fall in the higher elevations.

The Ohio River Valley and Northeast will remain dry and warm under high pressure. Afternoon highs in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia will reach the mid-80s.

Tropical update:

Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 is expected to become a tropical storm later today before making landfall. Up to 6 inches of rain will be possible along the North Carolina Coast, and winds will gust upwards of 50 mph. Coastal flooding is also a concern with 1-3 feet of storm surge. Gordon is a tropical depression but is expected to become a tropical storm again by the weekend as it meanders far out in the Atlantic.
