Worm moon eclipse: lunar show tonight

Worm moon eclipse
Lunar show tonight

A total lunar eclipse will occur later tonight, and if the sky is clear, the entire U.S. will be able to see it.

This month's full moon, also known as the Worm Moon, will have a total eclipse, the first full moon since November 2022. As the moon moves within the shadow of the Earth, it will appear dimmer, and a shadow will occur.

Once the moon is within the full shadow of Earth, the "blood" moon will look a faint orange. Totality will occur for just under an hour. The naked eye or some binoculars are all you'll need to see this show.

People in the Eastern and Central time zones must be up late to see the celestial show. The eclipse will start around 12:55 a.m. EDT tonight, with totality occurring between 2:26 a.m. EDT and 3:31 a.m. EDT. The western U.S. will not have to be up so late.

Of course, this show will require a clear sky. The WeatherRadar shows great viewing opportunities throughout the central and eastern U.S., with the Rockies and parts of the West Coast possibly missing out.

Every month, Weather & Radar publishes an astronomy show. Click here to discover what else will occur in the night sky this month.
