Breakfast brief
Bitter cold envelops most of U.S.

Now that the historic winter storm has dropped its last snowflake and ice crystal, it has left behind a bubble of Arctic cold air making it all the way to Florida. The West Coast remains warmer than average. The Breakfast Brief is published daily Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m. Eastern time.

The WeatherRadar shows snow showers across the Appalachians northward into the lower Great Lakes and Northeast this morning thanks to north and northwesterly flow. Supporting the snow showers are temperatures in the teens and 20s from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Mid-20s and 30s extend all the way to the Gulf Coast too!

Highs in the eastern third are expected to be only in the 20s and 30s, with slightly more tolerable 40s spreading into the Deep South. Florida is looking at highs in the 50s and 60s today, with Miami barely making it past 65. Sweater weather!

This day in weather history

On this day in 1989, an unseasonable wave of heat resulted in 25 cities having record highs from the Gulf Coast to Michigan. With that, severe weather broke out and an Illinois tornado caused 50 deaths. Additionally, a thunderstorm in Franklin, Kent., produced winds gusts as high as 100 mph.

In the central U.S., the coldest temperatures could be keeping many indoors today. Single digits are spreading across the northern Plains this afternoon but not much warmer teens and 20s will spread as far south as northern Texas.

The Rocky Mountains are always cold this time of year, but they will also have the busiest weather for today as snow descends from Montana to the Southwest by the evening hours. Check the WeatherRadar for timing here.

On the West Coast, the warmest temperatures will be felt for the entirety of the U.S., especially since highs are running up to 6 degrees above normal, with the exception of the Sierras running up to 10 degrees below average. See the TemperatureRadar for the latest readings.
