Breakfast Brief
Lake-effect tapers, West stays active

Lake effect snow continues for some today but the larger part of the 2-3-foot event is over. Other than a leftover chill in the eastern half, the West is the main busy spot this Friday. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

Lake effect snowfall is mostly over for the Upper Great Lakes but northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania, and western New York will continue seeing heavy snow squalls through this afternoon and evening. Snow drifts higher than 3 feet and blinding snow are possible.

The Arctic air mass has officially settled into the eastern two-thirds. The coldest temperatures will be found across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest with temperatures not reaching past the teens. The slightly more tolerable 20s and 30s will spread from Nebraska to the Ohio Valley and Northeast with 30s and 40s from Kansas to the Mid-Atlantic.

The southern tier from Texas to northern Florida will be much more comfortable in the 50s and 60s. Central and South Florida will be basking in the balmy 70s. See the highs on the TemperatureRadar.

The West wins the award for most active weather day as a storm system continues to bring rain and mountain snow. A large low-pressure system will pull in abundant moisture from the Pacific through an atmospheric river. You can watch the rain stream in on the WeatherRadar. As the moisture reaches the mountains, the rain will change over to snow across the Sierra Nevada and Cascades.

This newest storm will continue impacting the West through late Saturday. Those planning to get their tree this weekend will want to mind the WeatherRadar closely.
