    Brekfast Brief

Breakfast Brief
Mostly quiet for holiday hustle

For those wrapping up holiday preparations, the weather is on your side...mostly. A weak low pressure scooting across the Upper Midwest will bring snow to the Great Lakes today with light rain showers dragging along the associated cold front extending down to the southern Plains and mid-Mississippi Valley. To the west, a mix of rain and snow will impact the northern Rockies and High Plains before reaching into Colorado by the mid-afternoon hours. Rain will also be moving into the Pacific Northwest and northern California. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

Snow showers can be tracked throughout the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes today on the WeatherRadar. Some commutes could be interrupted so it will be extra important to view your local forecast before hitting the road, especially if you're headed to Grandma's house.

Along the associated cold front, many will be dodging scattered rain activity stretching from the Windy City to Oklahoma City. One caveat is that Chicago will be dealing with temperatures around the freezing mark Monday morning when the precipitation moves through. An icy mix cannot be ruled out.

Things will be mostly quiet to the South but Florida will likely get a dowsing of heavy rain along the east coast of the Peninsula. Have your alerts switched on.

Sunday's storm that impacted the West Coast is quickly moving inland to the northern and central Rockies and the High Plains. Widespread gusty winds will be amongst the mix of rain and snow. Be sure to tie down loose objects, especially large holiday decorations.

This day in weather history...

In 2009, a deadly severe weather outbreak had more than 30 tornado reports and 34 wind and hail reports across the Gulf Coast.

Another storm system will slide into the West Coast, starting with northern California early in the day before stretching into the Pacific Northwest. Heavy rainfall and gusty winds will be the main issues, but northern Cascade Mountain snow will begin showing up during the evening.

The warmth sticks to the Southwest today. Those trying to get in the holiday spirit with a hopeful wintry chill will have to wait as local records could be tied or broken.
