Breakfast Brief
Wintry preview amid drenching eastern rains

The southern Plains will exchange their 70s and 80s for 40s and 50s and this is just a preview of the cold diving south on Tuesday. The eastern U.S. continues to receive showers with localized flooding rains. The Breakfast Brief is published every Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

As a cold front continues shifting east, cool temperatures will descend southward. Texas had temperatures in the 70s and low 80s on Monday, but today, the big coats are required as a 15 to 20-degree drop in temperatures is on the way. The Lubbock area could see a mix of rain and snow! See the TemperatureRadar for the colder air diving south.

Tuesday's highs in the southern Plains.

To the north, this cold air mass will support more wintry weather across the Dakotas, the High Plains, the Front Range and the Upper Midwest throughout the day today. Keep in mind, the winter solstice isn't until December 21st, so we have plenty of winter to go!

Did you know?

During a Nor'easter event on this day, Maryland recorded an unofficial snow total of 48 inches. If verified, this would be the highest snow total in state history. The storm brought snow, rain, and ice throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast and many lost power due to high winds.

Speaking of winter, the Northeast will be dealing with a mix of precipitation, depending on the local temperature. While rain will be the dominating feature, the WeatherRadar shows possibly slick conditions thanks to freezing rain in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. This kicks off just before the morning commute, so be weather-aware.

Wondering where the warmer weather went? Take a look to the east today and Wednesday with 50s and 60s being felt from the Mid-Atlantic to the Southeast! Wednesday will technically be the warmest along the East Coast, but the highest temperatures will be felt early in the day as the cold air mass comes through during the afternoon. More on this tomorrow, but here's a preview.

To the West, a quiet weather day is in store thanks to high pressure. Temperatures will be in the 40s in the Pacific Northwest with 50s and 60s spreading through California and the Southwest. The cooler 30s will be found throughout the Great Basin and Mountain West.

News we are covering today:

  • Possible Southeast flooding
  • Big temperature swing
