Breakfast brief
Big changes ahead

February's second week kicks off quietly, but big weather shifts will bring big trouble for the rest of the work week. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m., Eastern time.

After a weekend of ice and snow rolling across the Northeast, the TemperatureRadar shows arctic temperatures from the northern Rockies eastward into New England. Many places will be subfreezing while the Dakotas and Montana will struggle to climb above zero. A bit of snow will fall across the Upper Midwest too.

Monday's highs

Meanwhile, a storm system moving out of the southern Rockies will move into the southern Plains later today. The WeatherRadar shows rain spreading from Texas into Southeast while keeping the Gulf Coast overcast.

Later tonight, this system will move across the southern Plains and will produce snow across the western Plains and the Rockies. Tomorrow and Wednesday, it will produce heavy rain and strong storms across the South while producing an icy mix and snow from the central Mississippi and the Ohio valleys into the Mid-Atlantic.

The West will be quiet with a mostly sunny sky across the Southwest and California. A bit of snow will linger in the Interior Northwest.
