Future Helene is in the western Caribbean and is expected to make landfall along the northern half of Florida's coast later this week. Our weather reporter explains how it could become the costliest on record in the video above.

Currently, Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, or future Helene, is positioned west of Jamaica. The system is bringing heavy showers and storms to Central America and will move northward over the coming days, passing over warmer waters and potentially undergoing rapid intensification.

Our weather reporter, Jonathan Petramala, highlights that Helene could be one of the costliest records if the storm makes landfall closer to Tampa Bay. The region's combination of low-lying homes, low elevation, and dense population makes it particularly vulnerable to the catastrophic impacts of storm surge.

There is still considerable uncertainty regarding Helene's exact path, and even slight shifts in its track could significantly alter the potential impacts. Tap the link below for the latest forecast update from our meteorologist, Irene Sans.
